How Drafting Works in FSL

A complete guide to the FSL draft — how picks work, strategy tips, and common mistakes to avoid.

The FSL Draft

The draft is the most exciting part of Fantasy Stock League. It's where you build your team by taking turns picking real stocks from the market.

How It Works

  1. Join or create a draft — Each draft has a set number of players and rounds
  2. Take turns picking — When it's your turn, you select a stock from the available universe
  3. Build your team — Each pick adds a stock to your portfolio
  4. Compete — Once the draft is complete, your portfolio's real-world performance is tracked

FSL uses a snake draft format. This means if you have the 1st pick in round 1, you'll have the last pick in round 2, then the 1st pick again in round 3. This keeps things fair.

Draft Strategy Tips

1. Do Your Research

Before the draft, look at which stocks have been trending. Check recent earnings, news, and sector performance. Go in with a plan.

2. Don't Just Pick What You Know

Everyone knows Apple, Tesla, and Amazon. But the best value might be in stocks that other players overlook. Lesser-known stocks with strong fundamentals can be draft steals.

3. Balance Risk and Reward

It's tempting to draft all high-growth stocks, but they're volatile. Mix in some stable, blue-chip stocks to protect your portfolio on down days.

4. Watch the Clock

Each pick has a timer. Have a few backup picks ready in case someone takes your target stock before you.

Common Mistakes

  • Chasing hype — A stock that's already up 50% might not have much upside left
  • No diversification — Drafting 5 tech stocks leaves you exposed if tech drops
  • Ignoring the draft order — Know when your picks are coming and plan accordingly
  • Panicking — If your top pick is taken, don't rush. Stick to your backup plan

The draft is where championships are won. Come prepared, stay calm, and trust your research.

Key Terms

Draft — The event where players take turns selecting stocks to build their portfolio/team.
Snake Draft — A draft format where the pick order reverses each round (1-2-3-4, then 4-3-2-1).
Pick Timer — The countdown clock for each pick. If it runs out, the system may auto-pick for you.
